Livid LED Driving Lights for Trucks and Cars Put Benchmark Performance Within Reach

Abstract: The Livid HyperDrive MK2 LED driving light puts optical benchmark performance within reach and delivers extremely long ROI thanks to its rigorous engineering that unlocks the full potential of LED technology.

LED Driving Lights

Auxiliary driving lights are designed to supplement your high beams with extended range of forward illumination for greater safety and visibility. The Livid HyperDrive MK2 LED driving lights pack a punch with consistent, uniform and far-reaching beams capable of illuminating obstacles at distance beyond what your high beam headlights offer. Whatever vehicle you drive, be it an interstate highway truck, pickup truck, 4WD, Jeep, SUV, or even a family off-road wagon, you can count on HyperDrive MK2 to deliver superior nighttime visibility that helps get to your destination safely. Utilizing Livid's industry-leading LightSYNC platform approach to design and engineering of heavy-duty vehicle-mounted LED luminaires, HyperDrive MK2 puts benchmark performance within reach and defines your path with dependable illumination even in the most wicked weather and darkest night.

LED Driving Lights

The 9-inch round driving light has been developed with the idea to unlock the full potential of LED technology. Incorporating 8 Cree's highest performing XLamp XM-L2 LEDs, HyperDrive MK2 produces an impressive light output of 7495 lumens that penetrates the darkness for superior clarity on the road. These high performance LEDs have been built on Cree's advanced silicon carbide technology and offer a breakthrough combination of high efficacy and high lumen output even at high drive currents. Drawing only 80 watts of power, the LED driving light delivers fantastic energy savings when compared to comparable traditional lighting systems which draw a ton of power and could drain vehicle's battery or overwhelm its electrical system. HyperDrive's low amp draw (7.6 amp each) means minimal strain on even the most modest vehicle electrical systems.

LED Driving Light

Visual performance is also a key factor when selecting light sources. Livid engineers opted for LEDs with correlated color temperature (CCT) tightly binned to 5500K. Bright white light in this CCT simulates daylight at noon on a clear day. Enhanced blue wavelengths in the light spectrum stimulate the ipRGC photoreceptors which suppress the release of melatonin, a pineal hormone that promotes sleepiness. Thus, driver's alertness and attention are reinforced. This makes it possible for the driver to respond quickly in an emergency. Beyond the way drivers feel or react based on this spectral distribution, the activated ipRGC photoreceptors make the pupils of the eye smaller. A smaller pupil will reduce optical aberrations and improve visual acuity so the driver can see more clearly under otherwise identical illuminance levels.

Unlike other competing products that sacrifice color rendition to gain high luminous efficacy, the Cree LEDs incorporated in HyperDrive MK2 driving lights have a minimum color render index (CRI) of 85, which is significantly higher than the typical 70 CRI of other products available on the market. This high spectral quality contributes to enhanced visual discrimination and color perception, which in turn increases visual comfort and forward visibility while minimizing eye strain and fatigue.

LED Driving Lights

The HyperDrive MK2 features 8 full sized 50mm optics which have been tooled specifically to work in conjunction with the CREE XM-L2 diodes for maximal photometric performance. These computer generated optics allow the driving light to throw out a tight and extended-reach beam that pierces darkness and cuts through thick smoke, fog, and dust. The TIR (total internal reflection) collimator lenses which are installed over each individual LEDs control the entire initial distribution from the source and guide rays to the target. Sophisticated optical engineering yields high optical efficiency (over 92%) and concentrated beam with optimum peripheral illumination. Compared with reflector optics, HyperDrive's specialized optics produce a beam pattern that is more intensive and clearly defined while harnessing more light.

The driving light is equipped with TIR lenses in your choice of 5° pencil beam and 15° spread beam. The pencil beam driving light projects a far-reaching beam of up to 1007 meters (measured at 1 lux). The long-range illumination is most wanted for high speed driving when the driver has limited time to visually adapt to the road conditions. The spread beam balances range and breadth to provide an expanded field of view yet without compromising too much on beam distance (823 m), making it ideal for applications where peripheral visibility along road edges is equally as important as recognizing objects at a far distance.

LED Driving Lights

The 12V DC driving light is powered by built-in multivolt circuitry which operates on the input voltage range from 9V to 48V. The ability to accommodate a universal input voltage offers unmatched compatibility with vehicle electrical systems. The driver circuitry accurately regulates the output current to ensure it matches the electrical requirements of the LEDs. The result is maximized circuit efficiency and consistent LED performance. Each chipset is protected with individually connected circuitry for overvoltage and transient spike circuit protection. Reverse polarity protection prevents system damage in the event of incorrect installation. The entire system is designed to be 100% compliant with all regulatory requirements on electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). High specification circuit design filters out high frequency harmonics that could cause electromagnetic interference (EMI) and radio frequency interference (RFI) with the on-board electronic system, radio and GPS.

Phosphor thermal degradation can be an issue of concern in high wattage LED lighting systems. The use of thermally optimized Cree LED packages is just the starting point of HyperDrive's integrated thermal engineering which ensures the LEDs' 50000-hour lumen maintenance (L70). These high power LED packages are populated in a dense cluster on an aluminum PCB which has low thermal resistance and dissipates heat efficiently over an expansive surface area. The critical solder interconnects between the printed circuit board and diode electrical pads are made of a creep resistant alloy which has excellent shear strength and thermal conductivity even under high electrical load. High solder joint integrity over the life of the product means the weakest point in the thermal path is no longer a concern. The waste heat generated at the LED junction is effectively transferred to the luminaire housing which provides efficient heat sinking. The housing is fabricated from die cast A360 aluminum alloy and has integral fins that maximize heat dissipation area. Superior thermal management allows more forward current to be applied to the LEDs for higher lumen output without accelerating lumen depreciation and compromising color stability. Beyond this, the luminaire has an integrated thermal sensor that provides overeating protection.

LED Driving Light

For vehicle-mounted luminaires, high resistance to vibration, corrosion and ingress of water and dust is a mission-critical challenge. The HyperDrive MK2 is built to withstand year-round rigors of most unforgiving terrains and extreme climates to keep the road ahead brightly lit. The solid-state nature of the light source combined with strong metallurgical bonding of solder joints, high reliability electronic assembly and rugged construction enables the luminaire to survive heavy mechanical shocks and vibrational stresses. A 5mm thick heavy duty stainless steel swivel bracket felicitates quick installation and optical aiming while dampening vibration. Both the bracket and aluminum housing receive a gray or black, ultra-weatherable TGIC based polyester powdercoat finish.

An impact resistant, UV stabilized 3mm Bayer Makrolon polycarbonate lens is sealed to the housing using the Dow Corning silicone rubber gasket which is mechanically secured. IP69 level ingress protection allows the hermetically sealed luminaire to resist dust ingress, rain/water invasion, close-range high pressure and even high temperature spray downs from all directions. A Gore-Tex breather equalizes pressure differentials within sealed enclosures to prevent the internal vacuums or pressure build-ups that stress the seal. The luminaire comes supplied with Deutsch plugs for rugged weather resistant connection.
