Luminaire & Light Fixture Ingress Protection (IP) Rating Chart

The International Electrotechnical Commission established the IP Code (or International Protection Rating), also known as Ingress Protection Rating, to specify the sealing effectiveness of electrical enclosures against the intrusion into the equipment of foreign solid objects and moisture. This classification system consists of the letters IP followed by two digits and an optional letter. The first digit refers to the protection against solid objects and the second digit designates protection from moisture (e.g. dripping, spraying, submersion, etc.).

Degrees of protection for luminaires and electrical equipment.

#

First Numeral: Level of protection against solids

0

No protection against contact and ingress of objects.

1

Any large surface if the body, such as the back of the hand, but no protection against deliberate contact with a body part >50mm.

2

Fingers or similar objects >12.5mm.

3

Tools, thick wires >2.5mm

4

Most wires, screws, nails.>1 mm.

5

Dust Proof: Dust is not entirely excluded, but cannot enter in sufficient quantity to interfere with the satisfactory operation of the equipment, complete protection against contact.

6

Dust Tight: No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact.

#

2nd Numeral: Level of protection against liquids (describes conditions withstood)

0

Not protected.

1

Vertically Dripping Water: Water dripping straight down when enclosure is in normal position

2

Vertically dripping water when tilted upwards: Vertically dripping water when the enclosure is tilted at an angle up to 15o from its normal position.

3

Spraying Water: Water falling as a spray at any angle up to 60o from the vertical.

4

Spraying Water: Water splashing against the enclosure from any direction

5

Water Jets: Water projected by a nozzle (6.3 mm) against enclosure from any direction.

6

Strong Water Jets: Water projected in powerful jets (12.5mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction.

6K

High Pressure Water Jets: Water projected in powerful jets (6.3mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction, under elevated pressure.

7

Immersion up to 1 meter: No ingress of water in harmful quantity when the enclosure js immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (up to 1m of submersion).

8

Immersion in more than 1 meter: The equipment is suitable for continuous immersion in water under conditions which shall be specified by the manufacturer. However, with certain types of equipment, it can mean that water can enter but only in such a manner that it produces no harmful effects.

9

Heated High Pressure Jets: Protected against close-range high pressure, high temperature spray downs.
