Available in 8x8, 16x16, and 8x32 matrices, Thornsun dot-matrix panels offer a versatile choice for impactful and engaging digital displays that can be used to prominently display animations, colorful graphics, and text messages. The LED matrix uses individually addressable APA102C or WS2812B RGB LED modules which can produce a full rainbow of LED colors. The intelligent control LED light source integrates three separate LEDs (red, green, and blue) and a smart control IC into a 5050 SMD package. Each LED channel has 256 gray scale levels which make the RGB module a 24-bit continuous tone system. With RGB color mixing, the LEDs have the ability to deliver 16.7 million full color display.
The APA102C used in Thornsun's LED matrices has shift registers, constant-current regulator and data shaping circuit that allow the all-in-one RGB LED module to be individually addressed and controlled through a standard two wire SPI protocol (with separate data and clock signals). Compared with other digitally addressable LEDs, PA102C LEDs have advantages of color-independent brightness modulation and high PWM (pulse-width modulation) frequency. These features make APA102C-based LED matrix displays more favorable for applications requiring intensity control and less prone to flickering, particularly at low brightness levels. WS2812B RGB LED modules have a similar design but require strict timing as they're designed with one-wire protocol, although they can be controlled with a single I/O line.
This flexible RGB LED matrix is fabricated on 3-ounce flexible PCBs made of rolled-annealed (RA) copper with excellent fatigue performance and high thermal conductivity. The RGB LEDs are mechanically and electrically bonded to the black FPCs using an SMT process that supports the formation of reliable solder joints. These flexible RGB LED matrices operate on 5 volt DC power supply while drawing 19.2W for 8x8 the LED matrix and 76.8W for the 16x16 and 8x32 LED matrixes. The APA102C LED matrix uses 4-pin JST SM connectors which provide DC5V+, COM-, DAT, and GND connections. The WS2812B LED matrix uses 3-pin JST SM connectors for DAT, DC5V+ and GND- connections. The digital LED display is designed to be driven by FPGAs, CPLD, Propeller, XMOS or other high speed processors.
